Seven Women Who Were Appointed to Endowed Chairs at Carleton College in Minnesota

Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, recently announced the appointment of nine scholars to endowed professorships. Seven of these appointments went to women.

Adriana Estill is the M. A. and A. D. Hulings Professor of American Studies, director of American studies, and professor of English. Professor Estill is a graduate of Stanford University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Laura Goering is the William H. Laird Professor of Russian and the Liberal Arts and the chair of German and Russian. She joined the faculty in 1988. Dr. Goering is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Deanna Haunsperger is the John E. Sawyer Professor of Liberal Learning and professor of mathematics. She joined the faculty in 1994. Professor Haunsperger is a graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

Judith Howard is the Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Dance and chair of theater and dance. She has been on the college’s faculty since 2007. Professor Howard is a graduate of the University of Maryland. She holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Nicola Melville is the Dye Family Professor of Music. A native of New Zealand, Professor Melville is a graduate of Victoria University. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in music from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York.

Annette Nierobisz is the Ada M. Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of the Social Sciences and professor of sociology. Dr. Nierobisz is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg in Manitoba. She holds a master’s degree from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto.

Éva Pósfay is the Class of 1944 Professor of French and the Liberal Arts, chair of French and Francophone studies, and director of cross-cultural studies. A native of Venezuela, Dr. Pósfay holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She earned a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Princeton University.
