Anne Howsare Boyens Chosen as the Eighth President of the Iowa Valley Community College District

Anne Howsare Boyens was appointed the eighth president of the Iowa Valley Community College District. The district was organized in 1966 as one of 15 community college districts in Iowa. It operates Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls (founded in 1890), Marshalltown Community College (founded in 1927), and Iowa Valley Continuing Education, as well as a satellite center (Iowa Valley Grinnell, established in 1993).

“We were fortunate to have a wealth of qualified candidates for this role, but Dr. Howsare Boyens rose to the top. She is an exceptional leader with a proven track record in getting results,” said board president Larry Johnson. “We are fortunate to name her as our next president. Dr. Howsare Boyens is without a doubt the right choice to take Iowa Valley into the future.”

“Iowa Valley already has a rich history of academic success and community involvement. I am excited to lead the colleges into the next phase,” Dr. Howsare Boyens said. “I’m excited for what’s to come and grateful for the opportunity to become the next president.”

Since 2017, Dr. Howsare Boyens has been serving as provost at Des Moines Area Community College, Urban Campus in Des Moines. She began her tenure at Des Moines Area Community College in 2003 as a counselor.

Dr. Howsare Boyens earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in school counseling at the University of Iowa. She holds a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Iowa State University.

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
