Six Women Named to Positions as Dean

Valencia Matthews was appointed interim dean of the newly created College of Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. She has been serving as a full professor and assistant dean of the former College of Arts and Sciences at the university.

Dr. Matthews is a graduate of South Carolina State University. She earned a master’s degree at Ohio State University and a doctorate from Florida State University.

Linda M. Fleming was promoted to dean of the College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. She has been serving as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the university. From 2008 to 2011, Dr. Fleming was chair of the psychology department at Gannon.

Dr. Fleming is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Kimberly A. Grieve was appointed dean of students at the University of South Dakota. She has been serving as assistant vice president and dean of students and retention at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. She has been on the staff at Lourdes University since 1992.

Dr. Grieve is a graduate of Michigan State University. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Toledo in Ohio.

Soyeon Shim was named dean of the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She has been a professor, director of the Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences, and associate dean of strategic initiatives for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Shim holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. She earned a doctorate in human ecology from the University of Tennessee.

Cheryl Renee Gooch is the new dean of the School of Humanities and Graduate Studies at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. She was the founding dean of the School of Humanities and Fine Arts and professor of media studies at Gainesville State College in Georgia.

Dr. Gooch previously held faculty posts at Alabama State University, Delaware State University, and Clark Atlanta University. She is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Dean Gooch earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in mass communication from Florida State University.

Marta Meana was appointed interim dean of the Honors College at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She is a professor of psychology at the university and has been on the faculty there since 1997.

Dr. Meana earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at McGill University. She conducted postdoctoral research in women’s health at the University of Toronto.

Caroline Attardo Genco Named the First Woman President of the University at Buffalo

Dr. Geneco comes to her new role from Tufts University in Massachusetts, where she has served as provost for the past four years. She is slated become the University at Buffalo's first woman president on August 10.
