Six Women Who Have Been Chosen to Serve as Deans at Colleges and Universities

Christa D. Acampora has been appointed the dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia. She was deputy provost and professor of philosophy at Emory University in Atlanta. Prior to Emory, she was a member of the faculty at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Dr. Acampora received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Emory University.

Valery Forbes is the new dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University. She is the former dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Earlier, Dr. Forbes was the director of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Dr. Forbes earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from Binghamton in New York She holds a master’s degree in marine environmental science and a Ph.D. in coastal oceanography from Stony Brook University in New York.

Victoria Burgos was promoted to dean of students at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She joined the office of student affairs at the college in 2021.

Dr. Burgos holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Salem College and recently defended her doctoral dissertation at the College of Saint Mary.

The University of Arkansas at Monticello has announced the appointment of Shuneize Slater as dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Since 2016, Dr. Slater has been on the faculty at Rock Valley College in Illinois as an assistant professor of general and organic chemistry.

Dr. Slater is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello, where she majored in chemistry. She earned a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences in 2015 from the University of Mississippi.

Brookie Best has been named dean of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego. She is a professor of clinical pharmacy and pediatrics at the university and has been serving as interim dean. Dr. Best joined the faculty in 2003.

Dr. Best completed her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of California, San Diego in 1994. She earned her doctor of pharmacy degree at the University of California, San Francisco in 1999.

Jeanie McCarville-Kerber was named dean of Health & Public Services at Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa. She has been on the faculty at the college since 2007.

Dr. McCarville-Kerber earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Drake University in Des Moines. She holds a master of social work degree from the University of Iowa, a master of public administration degree from Drake University, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Iowa State University.
