Three Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Provost Positions

Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota has named Michelle Mattson as its next provost and vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Mattson comes to Carleton College from Wittenberg University in Ohio, where she has served as provost and professor of German since 2019. Earlier, Dr. Mattson served as associate vice president of academic affairs for institutional effectiveness at Rhodes College in Memphis. She originally joined the faculty at Rhodes in 2004. Dr. Mattson will begin her work at Carleton on July 15.

Dr. Mattson is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Minnesota, where she majored in German and Latin. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in German from Stanford University. Dr. Matton’s latest book is Mapping Morality in Postwar German Women’s Fiction: Christa Wolf, Ingeborg Drewitz, and Grete Weil (Camden House, 2010).

Lori Hunt was appointed provost at the Community Colleges of Spokane in Washington. Dr. Hunt has worked at the Community Colleges of Spokane for nearly a decade, serving in a variety of roles both at the community college district and at Spokane Community College where she served as the dean of student success before being named acting provost in 2021.

Dr. Hunt is a graduate of Gonzaga University in Spokane, where she majored in sociology. She holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in educational leadership from Washington State University.

Tammi Vacha-Haase will be the new provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University-Commerce. She has been serving as dean of the Graduate College at Boise State University in Idaho since 2016. Earlier, Dr. Vacha-Haase spent almost 20 years at Colorado State University as a tenured professor in the department of psychology. Her administrative roles included associate director for the Center on Aging, founding director of the Aging Clinic of the Rockies, and associate dean of the Graduate School.

Dr. Vacha-Hasse holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling from Arizona State University. She earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Texas A&M University.
