Eiko Maruko Siniawer Appointed Provost at Williams College in Massachusetts

Eiko Maruko Siniawer has been chosen as the next provost of highly rated Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Dr. Siniawer is the ’97, the Class of 1955 Memorial Professor of History and chair of Asian studies at the liberal arts college. She joined the faculty at the college in 2003. A scholar of modern Japan, Professor Siniawer teaches a variety of courses on Japanese history, including surveys of early modern and modern Japanese history; a first-year seminar on the Japanese empire; electives on U.S.-Japan relations, and on emotions in modern Japanese history; an advanced tutorial on war memory, and an advanced seminar on the history of Tokyo. She also offers an introductory-level tutorial on Korean history, and an elective on the history of various kinds of panics.

Dr. Siniawer is the author of Waste: Consuming Postwar Japan (Cornell University Press, 2018) and Ruffians, Yakuza, Nationalists: The Violent Politics of Modern Japan, 1860-1960 (Cornell University Press, 2008). She is currently finishing a book manuscript about the history of Tokyo.

Professor Siniawer is a graduate of Williams College, where she majored in history. She holds a master’s degree in East Asian studies and a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University.
