A Trio of Women Who Have Been Appointed to Named Professorships at Research Universities

Chiara Daraio was appointed the G. Bradford Jones Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology. She joined the Caltech faculty in 2006. Her research is focused on the development of new materials with advanced mechanical and sensing properties for application in robotics, medical devices, and vibration absorption.

Dr. Daraio holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Ancona in Italy. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego.

Bana Jabri has been named the Sarah and Harold Lincoln Thompson Distinguished Service Professor in the departments of medicine, pathology, and pediatrics at the University of Chicago. Professor Jabri’s research focuses on celiac disease, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Jari holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Paris. She earned a medical doctorate at the Pasteur Institute.

Rebecca Hale is the inaugural holder of the Steve and Frosene Zeis Professorship at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Dr. Hale is a behavioral ecologist, whose research centers on the evolution of reproductive behaviors in salamanders and studying the neurological shifts that happen from mating to mothering in females.

Dr. Hale received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Oberlin College in Ohio. She earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Florida.
