Anne Harris Named the Fourteenth President of Grinnell College in Iowa

The board of trustees of Grinnell College, a highly selective liberal arts educational institution in Iowa, has chosen Anne Harris as the college’s 14th president. She is the second woman to hold the position.

Grinnell College enrolls just over 1,700 students according to the latest U.S. Department of Education data. Women make up 54 percent of the student body.

Dr. Harris came to Grinnell College in 2019 as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. Earlier she was a professor of art history at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Dr. Harris joined the faculty at DePauw University in 1999.

“It is a profound honor to be elected to serve this institution, which I have come to deeply love over the last year,” said President Harris. “I look forward to building a community that rests on the notion of civic trust — that as we live and learn in community, we each hold one another’s well-being in trust and are bound by a shared commitment to serve the common good both here on campus and out in the wider world.”

Dr. Harris is a graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Chicago.

  1. Congratulations on you selection as Grinnell’s 14th President. I am confident, with your educational & experience background, you will be successful in guiding the college over the next several years. I hope to return to the campus sometime in the future & have an opportunity to meet you. Living in South Carolina, limits my potential travel. Of course, the pandemic really limits my mobility as well. Good luck.
