Susan Henking Selected as the Leader of Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Salem Academy and College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, announced that Susan Henking will serve as interim president. She has been serving as interim vice president for academic and student affairs and dean of the college.

Salem College, an educational institution for women, enrolls about 700 undergraduate students and more than 130 graduate students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education.

“I look forward to serving this community as we move toward our next 250 years,” D. Henking said. “In my time here, I have learned how special Salem is and how crucial it is to the Winston-Salem of tomorrow.”

Dr. Henking is the former president of Shimer College in Chicago. Earlier, she was a professor of religious studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York.

Dr. Henking is a magna cum laude graduate of Duke University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School. Dr. Henking is the founding editor of the Teaching Religious Studies Series of Oxford University Press. She is co-editor of Mourning Religion (University of Virginia Press, 2008).
