Doris Cintrón Chosen to Lead Guttman Community College in New York City

Doris Cintrón has been named interim president of Guttman Community College in New York City. She will begin her new duties on August 1.

Guttman Community College enrolls just under 1,000 students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 53 percent of the student body.

“The memory of my first day of elementary school in New York City has never left me. Although I did not speak English, I knew that I wanted what that classroom and its teacher offered,” said Dr. Cintrón. “Thus, began an academic adventure that would become my professional passion. In accepting this appointment, I delight in the familiar — eager, anxious students in classrooms led by dedicated faculty — while appreciating the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Dr. Cintrón has been serving since 2012 as senior associate provost for academic affairs, assessment, and accreditation at The City College of New York. She has served as an administrator at City College since 1994. Dr. Cintrón was the acting dean and associate dean of the School of Education from 2003 through 2012, and led the school’s bilingual education program. Prior to joining City College’s faculty, Dr. Cintrón was an instructor at Columbia University’s Teachers College, where she also served as director of the Multicultural Educational Leadership Program.

A native of Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, Dr. Cintrón has a bachelor’s in English and comparative literature and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from City College of New York. She earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in education from Teachers College at Columbia University.
