American Educational Research Association Elects New Fellows

The American Educational Research Association has announced its class of 2012 Fellows. Of the 36 fellows who will be inducted at the group’s annual meeting in Vancouver on April 14, 16 are women. Here are brief biographies of the 16 women who will become AERA Fellows.
Donna E. Alvermann is a Distinguished Research Professor in Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia. She has been on the faculty at the University of Georgia since 1990. Professor Alvermann holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Texas. She holds a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University.
Anne E. Cunningham is a professor of cognition and development and director of the joint doctoral program in special education at the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Cunningham is a graduate of Michigan State University. She holds a master’s degree from Oakland University and a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Michigan.
Anne Haas Dyson is a professor of education policy, organization, and leadership at the University of Illinois. Professor Dyson is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
Catherine D. Ennis is a professor of kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is a graduate of Lynchburg College and holds a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
Sarah Freedman is a professor of language & literacy, society, and culture at the Graduate School of Education of the University of California at Berkeley. She has been on the faculty at Berkeley since 1989. Professor Freedman earned a master’s degree at the University of Chicago and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Lynn Fuchs is the Nicholas Hobbs Professor of Special Education and Human Development and co-director of the Kennedy Center Reading Clinic at Vanderbilt University. She sits on the editorial boards of 10 peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Fuchs is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University. She earned a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.
Glynda A. Hull is a professor of language & literacy, society, and culture at the Graduate School of Education of the University of California at Berkeley. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pittsburgh.
Susan Lytle is professor and chair of the department of language and literacy in education at the Graduate School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania. She has been on the faculty there for nearly 40 years. Dr. Lytle is a graduate of Cornell University. She holds a master’s degree from Stanford University and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth Birr Moje is associate dean for research and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the School of Education at the University of Michigan. Professor Moje is a graduate of Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She holds a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University.
Bonny Norton is professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the department of language and literacy education at the University of British Columbia. She has been on the faculty there since 1996. Dr. Norton is a graduate of the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. She holds a master’s degree in linguistics from Reading University in England and a doctorate from the University of Toronto.
Patricia S. O’Sullivan is a professor in the department of medicine and director of research and development in medical education at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. O’Sullivan has conducted educational research in the fields of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and other health-related professions.
Sheila Slaughter holds the McBee Professorship of Higher Education at the University of Georgia. Her most recent book, co-authored with Gary Rhoades is Academic Capitalism and the New Economy: Markets, State, and Higher Education.
Christine Sleeter is professor emerita at California State University Monterey Bay. Earlier in her career, she taught at Ripon College and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. She holds a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dorothy Strickland holds the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Chair in Education at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She is the past president of the International Reading Association.
Ana Maria Villegas is a professor of curriculum and teaching at Montclair State University in New Jersey. Dr. Villegas is a graduate of St. Peter’s College. She holds a master’s degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York and a Ph.D. from New York University.
Stella Vosniadou is a professor of cognitive psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. She has been on the Clark faculty since 1995. She previously taught at the University of Athens in Greece. Dr. Vosniadou is a graduate of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree from Teachers College at Columbia University and a Ph.D. in psychology from Clark University.
