New Assignments in Higher Education for Eleven Women Scholars

Carol Hostetter has been named director of the bachelor of social work program at Indiana University. She has been a professor in the School of Social Work since 2001.

Dr. Hostetter is a graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Indiana University.

Meenakshi Wadhwa has been named director of the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University. She has been on the faculty at the university since 2006 as director of the Center for Meteorite Studies and professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration.

Dr. Wadhwa holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Kellie Ann Jurado has been named a presidential assistant professor of microbiology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her current research investigates the abnormal immune response during Zika virus infection, including how the immune system reacts to Zika in the brain.

Dr. Jurado holds a Ph.D. in virology from Harvard University.

Rebecca Flannagan has been named the J. Lorin Mason Distinguished Professor at Francis Marion University. She is chair of university’s department of English and has been a faculty member since 1995.

Dr. Flannagan holds a bachelor’s degree in history and English education and a master’s degree in English both from Western Kentucky University, and a Ph.D. in American literature from Southern Illinois University.

Virginia Lolley has been named the first woman chief of staff for Callahan Eye Hospital at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is an assistant professor in the university’s department of ophthalmology and visual sciences.

Dr. Lolley is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. She holds a medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Stacey Bent has been named vice provost for graduate education and postdoctoral affairs at Stanford University. She currently serves as senior associate dean for faculty and academic affairs at Stanford’s School of Engineering.

Dr. Bent is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley where she majored in chemical engineering. She holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University.

Joanne Tuohy has been named an assistant professor of surgical oncology in the department of small animal clinical services at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Dr. Tuohy is a magna cum laude graduate of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she majored in Greek and Latin. She holds a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in comparative biomedical sciences (immunology) from North Carolina State University.

Laura Koppes Bryan has been named the inaugural T. G. Lewis Faculty Scholar in Organizational Behavior in the University of Kentucky Lewis Honors College. She was vice president for academic affairs and dean at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. Bryan holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate all from Ohio State University.

Sara Kiesler has been named a University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, the highest distinction a faculty member at the university can achieve. She is the Hillman Professor Emerita of Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction.

Dr. Kiesler holds a master’s degree in psychology from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in psychology from Ohio State University.

Frances Lee has been named a professor of politics and public affairs at Princeton University in New Jersey. She has served as a faculty member at the University of Maryland since 2004.

Dr. Lee is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi. She holds a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Paola Arlotta has been named a Harvard College Professor. She currently serves as the Gloub Family Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, chair of Harvard’s department of stem cell and regenerative biology, and an associate member of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research.

Dr. Arlotta holds a master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Trieste in Italy and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Portsmouth in England.
