In Memoriam: Jill Mattuck Tarule, 1943-2019

Jean Mattuck Tarule, a long-time educator and higher education administrator, died on February 3 at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She was 75 years old and had suffered from cancer.

A native of Barre, Vermont, Dr. Tarule’s was a graduate of Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, where both of her parents had served on the faculty. After earning master’s and doctoral degree in education at Harvard University, she worked for a brief time for the Vermont Department of Education before joining the faculty at Goddard College. There, in 1978, she became dean of the Graduate College.

Two years, later, Dr. Tarule joined the faculty at what is now Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She served as dean of the Division of Counseling and Psychology at Lesley from 1986 to 1989.

Returning to her home state in 1992, Dr. Tarule served for 13 years as dean of the College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont, From 2005 to 2009, she was associate provost at the university. She retired in 2013.

Dr. Tarule was a co-author of Women’s Ways of Knowing: The Development of Self, Voice and Mind (Basic Books, 1986). She was the co-editor of Knowledge, Difference and Power: Essays Inspired by Women’s Ways of Knowing (Basic Books, 1998).
