Meredith Bragg Raymond, professor emerita of English at the University of Massachusetts, died late last month at her home in Amherst. She was 99 years old.
A native of Brockton, Massachusetts, she graduated in 1939 from what is now Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts, where she double majored in English and American history and literature. After teaching high school, Professor Raymond went on to earn a master’s degree in English literature at the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College in Vermont and a Ph.D. from Boston University.
Dr. Raymond joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1964 as a lecturer in the English department, specializing in Victorian literature. She was named an assistant professor two years later and was promoted to associate professor in 1970 and to full professor in 1986.
Professor Raymond was the author of Swinburne’s Poetics: Theory and Practice (Walter De Gruyter, 1971) and co-editor of Women of Letters: Selected Letters of Elizabeth Barrett Browning & Mary Russell Mitford (Twayne Publishers, 1988).
Professor Raymond retired from the University of Massachusetts in 1991 after a 27-year teaching career.
