Five Women Hired to the Faculty at Haverford College in Pennsylvania

Haverford College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Pennsylvania, has appointed six new faculty members. Five of the six new hires are women.

Jane Chandlee was named an assistant professor of computational linguistics. For the past two years, she has been a visiting professor at the college. Dr. Chandlee is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where she double majored in English and computer science. She holds a master of fine arts degree in creating writing from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in applied linguistics from Boston University, and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Delaware.

Ariana Huberman was appointed associate professor and chair of the department of Spanish at the college. She is the author of Gauchos and Foreigners: Glossing Culture and Identity in the Argentine Countryside (Lexington Books, 2011). Dr. Huberman is a graduate of Tufts University in Massachusetts. She earned a Ph.D. at New York University.

Andrea Lommen is a new professor in the department of physics and astronomy. She was a professor of physics and astronomy at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Dr. Lommen is a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She holds a master’s degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Karen Masters will join the college’s faculty in January as an associate professor of physics. She currently teaches at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth in England. Dr. Masters is a graduate of Wadham College at the University of Oxford and holds a Ph.D. in astronomy from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Anna West is a new assistant professor in the health studies program at Haverford. She previously taught at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Dr. West holds a bachelor’s degree in human biology and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Stanford University in California. She also earned a master’s degree at the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
