University of Wisconsin Historian Wins Book Award

University of Wisconsin Historian April HaynesApril R. Haynes, an assistant professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, received the 2015 James Broussard Best First Book Prize from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR). The society was founded in 1977 with the goal of promoting the study of American history during the 1776 to 1861 period.

haynesBookDr. Haynes was honored for her book Riotous Flesh: Women, Physiology and the Solitary Vice in Nineteenth-Century America (University of Chicago Press, 2015). The book contends that diverse women popularized an evangelical version of antimasturbation physiology for their own reasons including a new expectation of heterosexual pleasure for married women.

A graduate of San Francisco State University, Dr. Hayes earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
