Karen Bandeen-Roche, the Frank Hurley and Catharine Dorrier Professor and chair of the department of biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in Baltimore, received the 2016 Marvin Zelen Leadership Award in Statistical Science presented by the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University. The award, first given out in 1997, recognizes an individual in government, industry, or academia who has demonstrated leadership and influenced the theory and practice of statistical science.
Professor Bandeen-Roche joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 1990 and was promoted to full professor in 2002. She is a graduate of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, where she majored in mathematics. Dr. Bandeen-Roche holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in operations research and industrial engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
In conjunction with the award, Professor Bandeen-Roche delivered a lecture on May 19 at Harvard entitled “The Flourishing Statistical Environment: How Can We Tell?”
