Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

money_bagHere is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

MorrisonOberlin College in Ohio has received a $250,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a $100,000 grant from the Ford Foundation that will enable faculty in the college’s cinema studies program to complete a documentary film on Princeton University professor emerita and Nobel laureate, Toni Morrison. The film is entitled The Foreigner’s Home and is based on comments Professor Morrison made in France a decade ago about being a “foreigner.”

kinserThe School of Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond received a two-year, $456,579 grant from the National Institutes of Health for a study on how prenatal yoga might reduce or prevent depression during and after pregnancy. The grant program is under the direction of Patricia Kinser, an assistant professor in the department of family and community health nursing. Dr. Kinser is a graduate of Haverford College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in biology. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in women’s health nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University as well as a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Virginia.

The University of Tennessee received a three-year, $300,000 grant from the Office of Violence Against Women of the U.S. Department of Justice. The grant will fund seminars and online trying programs aimed at preventing sexual assaults on campus.

The University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute received a donation of $200,000 from Marlene Harris-Ride Cincinnati to fund breast cancer research at the university. Ride Cincinnati was founded in 2007 as a cycling event for all ages. The charity event was established by dentist Harvey Harris in memory of his wife Marlene.
