Three Women Academics Chosen to Lead Scholarly Associations

Janine Wedel, University Professor in the School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, was named global chair of the Institute for Policy Research based at Bath University in England. Professor Wedel’s latest book is Unaccountable: How Elite Power Brokers Corrupt Our Finances, Freedom and Security (Pegasus Books, 2014).

Professor Wedel joined the faculty at George Mason University in 2002. She is a graduate of Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, where she majored in history and German. She holds a master’s degree from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Marla Miller, professor and director of the public history program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, was named president-elect of the National Council on Public History. She will serve for two years as president-elect and then lead the organization from 2018 to 2020. She is the author of several books including Betsy Ross and the Making of America (Henry Holt, 2010) and Rebecca Dickinson: Independence for a New England Woman (Westview Press, 2013).

Professor Miller joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts in 1999. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Marie Hardin, dean of the College of Communications at Pennsylvania State University, was named vice president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She will serve as vice president for two years and then become president of the organization in 2018. Professor Hardin is the co-editor of the Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media (Routledge, 2014).

Dr. Hardin has been dean of the College of Communications since July 2014 and has served on the Penn State faculty since 2003. She holds a master’s degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
