The University of Wisconsin-Madison has been awarded an endowed chair from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Chair on Gender, Well-Being, and a Culture of Peace is the first UNESCO chair in the state of Wisconsin. There are 670 such chairs worldwide, with 12 focused on gender studies.
Two scholars will share the UNESCO chair at the University of Wisconsin.
Araceli Alonso is a senior lecturer in gender and women’s studies and director of Gender, Clinical Practice, and the Health Sciences for the university’s Women and Well-being in Wisconsin and the World Initiative. Dr. Alonso is a graduate of the University of Madrid in Spain. She holds a master’s degree in physical anthropology from Minnesota State University. Dr. Alonso earned a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in medical anthropology from the University of Wisconsin.
Teresa Langle de Paz is the co-director of the Women’s Knowledge International at the Foundation for a Culture of Peace. She also serves as a fellow for the Women’s Research Center at the university. Dr. Langle de Paz is a graduate of Complutense University in Madrid, Spain. She holds a master’s degree in Hispanic studies and a Ph.D. from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
