Six Women Faculty Members at Smith College Promoted to Associate Professor and Granted Tenure

SmithlogoSmith College thee highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in Northampton, Massachusetts, has announced the promotion of eight faculty members from the rank of assistant professor to associate professor. All eight were granted tenure. Six of the eight promotions went to women.

banerjee_130Payal Banerjee was appointed associate professor of sociology. She has conducted research on Indian immigrant in information technology fields in the United States and Chinese minorities in India. She holds a Ph.D. from Syracuse University in New York.

beery_130Annalise Beery was promoted to associate professor of psychology. Dr. Beery spent her undergraduate years at Williams College and the California Institute of Technology. She earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Beery joined the Smith College faculty in 2008.

Kalba_GalleryLaura Kalba was named associate professor of art. Her research and teaching interests mainly focus on late nineteenth- and early-twentieth century European art and architecture. Her book, Color in the Age of Impressionism: Commerce, Technology, and Art, is forthcoming from Pennsylvania State University Press. Dr. Kalba is a graduate of Concordia University. She holds a master’s degree in history from McGill University in Montreal and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Southern California.

CMMphoto1Caroline Melly was appointed associate professor of anthropology. She is a sociocultural anthropologist whose research focuses on how various policies and trends are transforming urban spaces and livelihoods in contemporary Africa. Dr. Melly earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California, Irvine.

Stonephoto-smallAndrea Stone was promoted to associate professor of English language and literature. Dr. Stone teaches literatures of the African diaspora from the eighteenth century to the present. She is the author of the book Black Well-Being: Health and Selfhood in Antebellum Black Literature (University Press of Florida, 2016). Dr. Stone is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto.

wildhagen_130Tina Wildhagen was named associate professor of sociology. She attended Grinnell College in Iowa as an undergraduate and completed her graduate work at the University of Iowa. Her research and teaching interests focus on social inequality in the American education system.
