Martha Hodes, professor of history at New York University has won the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize presented by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. The award is presented annually and recognizes the finest scholarly work in English on Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil War soldier, or the American Civil War era. The prize comes with a $50,000 award.
Professor Hodes is being honored for her book Mourning Lincoln (Yale University Press, 2015). The book delves delve into personal and private responses – of African Americans and whites, Yankees and Confederates, men and women, soldiers and civilians, rich and poor – to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
Professor Hodes joined the faculty at New York University in 1994 after teaching at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She was promoted to full professor of history at NYU in 2007.
A graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine, Professor Hodes earned a master’s degree at Harvard University and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Princeton University.
