The board of trustees of Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan, has named Elizabeth Burns as the educational institution’s new president. Dr. Burns has been serving as interim provost at the college since June 2015.
Marygrove College was founded in 1905 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It became a co-educational institution in 1971. Marygrove College now enrolls about 900 undergraduate students and a similar number of graduate students. Women make up 70 percent of the undergraduate student body.
Before joining the staff at Marygrove College in 2015, Dr. Burns was associate dean for faculty and clinical affairs in the School of Medicine at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Earlier, she was president and CEO of the Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies of Michigan State University. She has also served on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of North Dakota.
Dr. Burns is a magna cum laude graduate of Marygrove College. She holds a master’s degree from the College of Education at the University of Iowa and a medical doctorate from the University of Michigan.
