Kyla F. Ortved, associate professor of large animal surgery and the Jacques Endowed Chair in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, received the inaugural Rising Star Award from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The new award recognizes early- to mid-career scholars who have demonstrated exceptional achievements and contributions while excelling in surgical practice and leadership.
Dr. Ortved joined the faculty of the New Bolton Center, Penn Vet’s large animal hospital and research campus, in 2016. An expert in equine orthopedics, Dr. Ortved’s surgical work spans acute injuries to complex chronic conditions that affect performance horses. Her minimally invasive techniques have helped shape standards within her speciality while maintaining a commitment to excellence in patient care. Beyond her surgical work, Dr. Ortved also leads an orthopedic regenerative medicine laboratory that investigates the molecular signals that drive cartilage to break down and to regenerate. As equine osteoarthritis closely parallels the human condition, Dr. Ortved’s research informs both veterinary and human medicine.
A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Dr. Ortved received her doctor of veterinary medicine degree from the University of Guelph in Ontario and completed a large animal surgical residency at Cornell University. After completing her residency, Dr. Ortved earned a Ph.D. in gene therapy for equine cartilage repair from Cornell.
