Data Shows Women Are More Likely Than Men to Earn Their Bachelor’s Degree Within Four Years

The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center has released new data regarding how long it took 2024–2025 undergraduate award recipients to complete their program. The report includes information on those who earned either their first-ever undergraduate award (including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, or undergraduate certificates), as well as those who earned their bachelor’s degree after earning a prior undergraduate award.

Among the 2.33 million students who earned their first-ever undergraduate award in 2024–2025, the median time to degree was 3.7 years for bachelor’s degrees, 3.0 years for associate degrees, and 2.3 years for certificates. At the bachelor’s degree level, women’s median time to degree was 3.7 years, while men’s was 3.9 years. However, men had a faster time to degree than women did for associate degrees (2.9 years versus 3.3 years) and certificates (1.8 years versus 2.7 years).

For women who earned their bachelor’s degree in 2024–2025, 6.8 percent did so in 3 years, 55.1 percent did so in four years, 18 percent did so in 5 years, 5.5 percent did so in 6 years, and 12.9 percent did so in 7 or more years. For men who earned their bachelor’s degree in 2024–2025, 4.8 percent did so in 3 years, 48.9 percent did so in 4 years, 22.2 percent did so in 5 years, 7.7 percent did so in 6 years, and 15 percent did so in 7 or more years.
