The Independent Colleges and Universities of New Jersey (ICUNJ) has selected Elizabeth Maher Muoio as the organization’s next president and chief executive officer. She began her new role on September 8.
ICUNJ is a nonprofit organization that supports New Jersey’s 13 independent, nonprofit, public mission institutions of higher education through efforts such as philanthropy and public policy advocacy. According to the organization, its member institutions enroll more than 63,000 students.
Muoio comes to her new role after nearly eight years as the state treasurer for New Jersey. Before that, she represented Mercer and Hunterdon counties in the New Jersey General Assembly. Earlier in her career, Muoio served as Mercer County’s director of economic development and sustainability, as an elected Mercer County Commissioner, as Mercer County’s democratic chair, and as legislative director for Texas Congressman Jack Brooks.

Muoio is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She earned her juris doctorate from Georgetown University Law School in Washington, D.C.
