Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Lucinda Cantry, associate professor in the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing at the University of Masschusetts Amherst, has received a two-year, $500,000 grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center to study the causes of preeclampsia in an effort to improve outcomes for expecting mothers and their babies. The research project will have a particular focus on understanding how the condition disproportionately impacts Black women.
Spelman College in Atlanta has secured $437,000 in federal Community Project Funding for a new program centered on enhancing the women’s college’s campus safety. The new funds will go toward improved communication and emergency alert systems, campus security upgrades, and community education and safety initiatives.
Allison Wysocki has gifted $690,000 to her alma mater, Scripps College in Claremont, California, to expand access to internships and financial support for students at the women’s college. The funding establishes the Allison Wysocki ’99 Endowed Internship Fund, which will provide grants so students can access transformative internship experiences without financial strain. Wysocki’s gift will also create a new endowed student scholarship.
