Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg, the William Nordhaus Professor of Economics and Global Affairs at Yale University, has received the 2026 Bodossaki Excellence Award in Social Sciences. Presented by the Bodossaki Foundation, the biennial award is presented to Greek scientists whose life’s work has contributed to the advancement of science.
An applied microeconomist, Dr. Goldberg has fundamentally shaped the empirical study of global trade and development. Her research examines how trade politics affect productivity, consumer welfare, poverty, inequality, and economic growth, particularly in developing countries. Dr. Goldberg’s recent work has centered on shifts in globalization, including the resurgence of protectionism, the U.S.-China trade war, industrial policy, and gender-based barriers to economic participation and growth.
Dr. Goldberg has been a Yale faculty member for the past 25 years. She holds a joint appointment in the department of economics and the Jackson School of Global Affairs, and she is affiliated with the university’s Economic Growth Center. From 2018 to 2020, Dr. Goldberg was chief economist of the World Bank Group. She has also served as president of the Econometric Society, vice president of the American Economic Association, and editor-in-chief of the American Economic Review.
After graduating from the University of Freiburg in Germany, Dr. Goldberg earned a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.
