Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens has named Roslyn Clark Artis president of the university. She is the first woman to serve as president in the historically Black university’s 135-year history. Dr. Artis has been serving as interim president for the past six months.
Charles George, chairman of the board of trustees at Florida Memorial University, stated, “I am impressed with her adept administrative and people skills. She has hit the ground running and brings superb qualifications and leadership skills to FMU. She is an asset to our students, faculty and administration and the South Florida communities.”
After a career in law, in 2003 Artis joined the staff at Mountain State University in Parkersburg, West Virginia, as senior academic officer for distance education. She later served as provost for distance education, vice president for advancement, president of the Mountain State University Foundation, and chief academic officer of the university. The university closed at the beginning of 2013 after it lost its accreditation.
Dr. Artis is a graduate of West Virginia State University and the West Virginia University School of Law. She holds an educational doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
