Three Women Named to Provost Posts

ReidMartinezKathaleen Reid-Martinez was named provost at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She will begin her new job on January 2. She has been serving as provost at Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City. Earlier in her 25-year career in higher education, she has served as associate professor of language arts and communication at Lee University, executive vice president for administration at the Church of God Theological Seminary, dean of the School of Government at Regent University, and vice president for nontraditional and experimental learning at Azuza Pacific University.

Dr. Reid-Martinez is a graduate of the University of Maryland. She holds a master’s degree in mass communication and a Ph.D. in speech communication from the University of Denver.

harmsenFrederika Harmsen was appointed provost and vice president of academic affairs at Sacramento State University in California. She will take office in February. Since 2011, Dr. Harmsen has been serving as professor of geology and dean of the College of Natural Sciences at Chico State University in California. Previously, she spent 26 years at Fresno State University serving as a professor, department chair, and associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics.

Professor Harmsen was born in the Netherlands and grew up in New Zealand. She came to the United States in 1984 after earning a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Wellington in New Zealand.

Hughes KarlaKarla Hughes was appointed executive vice president and provost for the University of Louisiana System. She will lead the academic programs at the system’s nine institutions of higher learning. For the past six years, Dr. Hughes has been provost and vice president for academic affairs at Morehead State University in Kentucky.

Dr. Hughes holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kansas State University. She holds a Ph.D. in animal science and food safety from the University of Tennessee.
