Silvia Bermúdez Honored for Promoting Feminism in Academia and Hispanic Society

Silvia Bermúdez, professor of literature and Iberian studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has received an academic recognition award from the Asociación de Estudios de Género y Sexualidades (Association for Gender and Sexuality Studies), an organization founded by Costa Rican writer Victoria Urbano. Dr. Bermúdez was honored for her outstanding career in education, particularly her work in advancing gender equality and promoting feminism in academia and Hispanic society and culture.

A UC Santa Barbara faculty member since 1992, Dr. Bermúdez teaches a wide-range of courses on modern and contemporary Spanish literary and cultural history, popular music studies, feminist studies, and poetic discourses. Her own scholarship centers on Iberian feminisms, Latin American music, and the work of Galician women photographers. She has edited and authored several books, including Rocking the Boat: Migration and Race in Contemporary Spanish Music (University of Toronto Press, 2018).

Dr. Bermúdez received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.
