Michelle B. Larson has been named the nineteenth president of Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. Her appointment makes her the institution’s first woman president in its 128-year history. She will begin her presidency on April 1.
Clarkson University enrolls over 2,500 undergraduate and nearly 1,100 graduate students, according to the most recent federal information. Women represent only one third of the undergraduate student body.
Originally trained as an astrophysicist, Dr. Larson comes to her new role after 12 years as president and CEO of The Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Prior to joining the planetarium in 2013, she served in academic leadership for over a decade, including service as vice provost of Utah State University.
“Clarkson University captured my head and my heart from the start. It’s clearly a place where curiosity grows, ideas illuminate the path forward, and collaboration drives success,” said Dr. Larson. “As I came to know the Clarkson community, I was impressed by each person’s palpable commitment to this university. Everywhere I looked, I saw a spark in people’s eyes and the talent to ignite it. Clarkson is a bold yet humble community learning together and tackling the world’s challenges. I am deeply honored and absolutely thrilled to accept the opportunity to lead Clarkson University.”
A native of Alaska, Dr. Larson earned her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in physics from Montana State University.
