In Memoriam: Mary Belle McDonald, 1938-2025

Mary Belle McDonald, former professor at the University of Missouri, passed away on March 15. She was 86 years old.

A native of Louisiana, McDonald received her bachelor’s degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She went on to pursue a graduate education, ultimately earning her master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Iowa.

After completing her education, McDonald joined the faulty at the University of Missouri, becoming the university’s third-ever African American professor. During her tenure, she was a key member in establishing the school’s nutrition and dietetics department. In honor of her many contributions to the university, her department established the Mary B. McDonald Dietetics Conference Room.

McDonald was a leader in her field, serving on the board of directors for the American Dietetic Association. She was a dedicated member of her community and served as a lifetime member of the NAACP, Church Women United, and the Rainbow Diamond Kiwanis Club.
