Six Women Professors Appointed to New Academic Roles

Doris Benbrook has been named associate director for translational research at the University of Oklahoma Health Stephenson Cancer Center. A faculty member in the OU College of Medicine for more than three decades, she currently holds the title of Presbyterian Health Foundation Presidential Professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology. Her scholarship focuses on developing low-toxicity drugs to prevent and treat gynecological cancer, as well as other forms of cancer and diseases.

Dr. Benbrook holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Loyola University Medical Center.

Elizabeth Quay Hutchison has earned the title of Regents’ Professor in the department of history in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New Mexico. Over the course of her 25-year tenure with the university, she has served in various academic and administrative roles, including associate vice president for equity and inclusion and director of the Feminist Research Institute. A scholar of Latin American labor history, she has authored three books, including Labors Appropriate to Their Sex (Duke University Press, 2001).

Dr. Hutchison is a graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in the comparative study of religion. She holds a master’s degree in Latin American studies and a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley.

Anouck Girard has been appointed chair of the department of aerospace engineering in the Daytona Beach College of Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. She comes to her new role from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves as the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the department of aerospace engineering and the department of robotics. Her research focuses on dynamics, control, and optimization of advanced autonomous vehicles in space, air, ground, or marine domains.

Dr. Girard is a graduate of École des Mines d’Alès in France, where she studied computer science. She holds a master’s degree in ocean engineering from Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Erin Edgington has been named associate dean of undergraduate affairs for the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada Reno. She currently serves as an associate professor and chair of the university’s department of world languages and literatures. Earlier in her tenure, she served as associate dean of the Honors College. Her academic expertise centers on 19th-century French literature and art.

Dr. Edgington received her bachelor’s degree in French language and literature and sociology and her master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Nevada Reno. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in French literature from Indiana University-Bloomington.

Lauren Milne has been promoted to associate professor with tenure in the department of mathematics, statistics, and computer science at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She first joined the Macalester faculty in 2018 as an assistant professor. An expert on human-computer interaction, she focuses her work on making digital interfaces more accessible for people with disabilities.

Milne is a graduate of Carleton College in Minnesota, where she majored in physics. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in computer science and engineering from the University of Washington.

Reitumetse Obakeng Mabokela has been appointed associate chancellor and vice provost for global affairs and strategies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In addition to her administrative role, she will also hold a faculty appointment as a professor of comparative and international higher education. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, she was a professor of higher education and the assistant dean for international studies in the College of Education at Michigan State University.

Originally from South Africa, Dr. Mabokela graduated magna cum laude from Ohio Wesleyan University with her bachelor’s degree in economics. She holds a master’s degree in labor and industrial relations and a Ph.D. in educational policy studies from the University of Illinois.
