American Heart Association Recognizes Jane Newburger for Outstanding Mentorship in Academia

Jane W. Newburger, the Commonwealth Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, has received the 2024 Eugene Braunwald Academic Mentorship Award from the American Heart Association. The annual award recognizes individuals with successful academic careers in mentoring the next generation of faculty researchers, educators, and health care professionals.

Dr. Newburger has conducted extensive research into several different pediatric cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, she has made significant contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of Kawasaki disease, a condition that can cause heart and blood vessel damage in children under age 5. In addition to her own clinical work, she has mentored dozens of researchers who have gone on to achieve academic leadership roles around the world.

A faculty member with Harvard Medical School for the past 45 years, Dr. Newburger also serves as the associate cardiologist-in-chief for academic affairs, medical director of the cardiac neurodevelopment program, and senior cardiologist in the department of cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Newburger completed her undergraduate degree at Bryn Mawr College, a women’s college in Pennsylvania. She earned her medical doctorate and her master’s degree in public health from Harvard University.
