In Memoriam: Kristin Bervig Valentine, 1933-2024

Kristin Bervig Valentine, longtime professor at Arizona State University, passed away on August 26. She was 91 years old.

Dr. Valentine served as a professor of communication and women’s studies at Arizona State University from 1976 until her retirement in 2003. Her academic interests centered around performance studies, which led her to establish “The Empty Space,” a performance studio for students to gain real-life experiences in human communication. She held several leadership roles throughout her long tenure, including service as president of the university senate.

Before she began teaching at Arizona State University, Dr. Valentine served as a professor of communication at the University of Kentucky. She also spent two years teaching at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Dr. Valentine received her bachelor’s degree in speech therapy and master’s degree in communication from the University of Washington. She held a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Utah.
