Barbara Jung Named First Woman Dean of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine

Barbara Jung has been appointed associate vice chancellor and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. When she assumes her new role in January 2025, she will become the first woman to hold the position.

Dr. Jung comes to her new role from the University of Washington, where she has spent the past five years as the first woman chair of the department of internal medicine. Prior to her current role, she was chief of gastroenterology at the University of Illinois Chicago. She has conducted extensive clinical and basic research on gastrointestinal diseases, including colorectal cancer and pancreatitis. Last year, she was elected president of the American Gastroenterological Association.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Jung received her medical degree from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany.
