Ann Schmiesing to Lead the University of Colorado Denver

Ann Schmiesing has been selected to serve as interim chancellor of the University of Colorado’s Denver campus. She will assume her new role on August 26.

The University of Colorado Denver, which includes the university system’s Anschutz Medical Campus, enrolls over 14,000 undergraduate students and nearly 9,700 graduate students. Women represent about 57 percent of all undergraduates.

For nearly three decades, Dr. Schmiesing has served as a faculty member and administrator at the University of Colorado Boulder. She currently serves as vice chancellor for academic resource management.

A full professor of German, Dr. Schmiesing has held several academic leadership roles since joining the faculty in 1995. Over the course of her tenure, she has served as chair of the department of German and Slavic languages and literatures, director of the Sewall Residential Academic Program, dean of the Graduate School, and vice provost for graduate affairs. Her academic pursuits on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century German literature have led to numerous publications including Disability, Deformity, and Disease in the Grimms’ Fairy Tales (Wayne State University Press, 2014).

Dr. Schmiesing received her bachelor’s degree from Willamette University in Oregon. She holds a master’s degree in comparative literature from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in German from Cambridge University in England.
