Four Women Scholars Who Are Taking on New Duties

Summer Sherburne Hawkins, a professor in the Boston College School of Social Work, was appointed the inaugural associate director of the Boston College Global Public Health and the Common Good interdisciplinary undergraduate program. Dr. Summers joined the Boston College School of Social Work faculty in 2012. She is a social epidemiologist with an interest in addressing policy-relevant research questions in women’s and children’s health.

Dr. Hawkins is a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She holds a master’s degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia and a Ph.D. from the University of London.

Erin Calipari, an associate professor of pharmacology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, was given the added duties of director of the Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research. The center’s research is focused on addiction to alcohol, opioids, and stimulants. Scientists also study addiction to food and general disorders of motivation.

Dr. Calipari earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2013. She then went on to complete her postdoctoral training at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Vikkie McCarthy, professor of management in the College of Business at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, was named the inaugural director of the Center for Applied Business Research at the university. She has been a faculty member at APSU for 15 years. Dr. McCarthy’s research interests include leadership, corporate social responsibility, and business sustainability.

Dr. McCarthy is a graduate of Georgia State University, where she majored in political science. She holds a master of public administration degree from Murray State University in Kentucky and a Ph.D. in organizational leadership from the University of Oklahoma.

Hannah Rodriguez is a new assistant professor in the department of agriculture, veterinary & rangeland sciences at the University of Nevada Reno. She has been a licensed veterinarian of her own practice for over five years and practices on both large and small animals.

Dr. Rodriguez is a graduate of the University of Nevada. She holds a master of public health degree from San Diego State University and a doctor of veternary medicine degree from Washington State University.
