College and Universities Announce the Appointments of Seven Women to Administrative Posts

Susan B. Smith was named chief compliance officer at Temple University in Philadelphia. She has served in the role on an interim basis since January. Before joining the ethics and compliance team at the university in 2019, Smith worked for more than two decades as a lawyer in Temple’s Office of University Counsel.

Smith is a graduate of Syracuse University in New York. She earned a juris doctorate at George Washington University.

Renae Myles Payne is the new director of athletics at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. She had been serving as the senior associate athletic director for administration and chief diversity officer at the University of Miami in Florida. Earlier, she was the senior associate athletic director for internal operations, chief operating officer, and senior women’s administrator at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Dr. Payne holds a master’s degree in sports administration from Northwestern State University in Louisiana and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Pittsburgh.

Katie Condon will be the next vice president for enrollment management at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, effective May 30. She has been serving as director of enrollment management at West Virginia University. She joined the staff there in 2014 and also was an instructor in communications.

Condon is a graduate of Albion College in Michigan, where she majored in communication studies. She holds a master’s degree in communication theory and research from West Virginia University, where she is also studying for a doctorate.

Maria Harris Tildon, vice president for state and local affairs for Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine, will serve as interim leader of the Office of Economic Development and Community Partnerships. She joined the staff at the university in April 2022. Earlier, she held senior leadership roles with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the largest health insurer in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Tildon earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Boston University and a juris doctorate from American University in Washington, D.C.

Shay Humphrey is the inaugural general counsel at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Since 2014, she has worked at the law firm of Catania, Mahon, & Rider in Newburgh, New York.

A native of Lake George, New York, Humphrey is a graduate of Vassar College and earned a juris doctorate at the University of Florida’s College of Law.

Shawan Baptiste has been named director of bands at Texas College in Tyler. She has been serving as the director of bands for the Dekalb County School District in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Baptiste earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Texas College in 2009. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.

Kiely Fletcher was promoted to vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Illinois Chicago. She was the associate vice provost for enrollment management. Earlier, she was executive director of student financial aid and scholarships at the university.

Fletcher earned a master’s degree in educational policy and leadership from Ohio State University in 2003.
