Guillermina Gina NuÌñez-Mchiri has been named dean of the Imperial Valley campus of San Diego State University in Calexico, California. She will take office on August 4.
Dr. NuÌñez-Mchiri, a native of Calexico, has been serving as an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Texas at El Paso. She began as a visiting assistant professor at UTEP, where she eventually gained tenure and became director of Women’s and Gender Studies.

I look forward to serving our border region by providing students with opportunities to pursue careers in nursing, education, the liberal arts, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. There is a sea of opportunity in the Imperial Valley and the time to explore new avenues for growth and transformation is now,” said Dr. NuÌñez-Mchiri. “I am honored to be able to come home to share my gifts with the community that has helped raise me.”
Dr. NuÌñez-Mchiri holds a bachelor’s degree in international business and a master’s degree in Latin American studies from San Diego State University. She later earned a doctorate in cultural anthropology from the University of California, Riverside.
