The College Majors With the Widest Gender Disparities in Degree Attainments

A new analysis by StudySoup has identified college majors that have the greatest gender differences in degree attainments. The study included only those disciplines with at least 5,000 majors. Majors that are predominantly male and majors that are predominantly female are included.

The major with the great gender disparity is early childhood education. Women make up 96.2 percent of the majors in the field. Women also make up 90 percent or more of all majors in family studies and elementary education. In special education, social work, nursing, human services, and public health, women make up more than 80 percent of the students.

In computer engineering, men make up 87.4 percent of all majors, the highest percentage favoring men among all the disciplines studied. Men make up more than 80 percent of all majors in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and information technology.

Women make up 79 percent of all students majoring in animal science and men make up 79.8 percent of the students majoring in information technology.
