In Memoriam: Marta Weigle, 1944-2018

Marta Weigle, University Regents Professor in the department of anthropology at the University of Mexico, died on June 14. She was 74 years old.
Dr. Weigle joined the faculty at the university in 1972 with joint appointments in English and anthropology. Later she chaired the American studies department. Dr. Weigle joined the anthropology department full time in 1993 and served as department chair from 1995 to 2002.
Professor Weigle was the author of numerous books on New Mexico including Brothers of Light, Brothers of Blood: The Penitentes of the Southwest (University of New Mexico Press, 1976) and New Mexicans in Cameo and Camera: New Deal Documentation of Twentieth-Century Lives (University of New Mexico Press, 1985). She also authored a number of works on mythology including Creation and Procreation: Feminist Reflections on Mythologies of Cosmogony and Parturition (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1989).
Dr. Weigle earned a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.
