A Quartet of New Deans at Colleges and Universities

Karen-EmmonsKaren Emmons was named dean of academic affairs at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University. She has been serving as vice president for research and director of the Kaiser Foundation Research Institute in Oakland, California. She will begin work in Cambridge on November 1.

Dr. Emmons served on the faculty at Harvard from 1994 to 2014. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Illinois, and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Stony Brook University of the State University of New York System.

Lisa-KirtmanLisa Kirtman was promoted to dean of the College of Education at California State University, Fullerton. She has been serving as associate dean. Dr. Kirtman has been on the faculty at the college for 16 years and is the former chair of the department of elementary and bilingual education.

Dr. Kirtman is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where she majored in psychology. After teaching in the public schools, she earned a master’s degree in educational administration from UCLA and a doctorate in educational policy from the University of California, Berkeley.

PERAGALLONilda Peragallo Montano was named dean of the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been serving as professor and dean of the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami in Florida. She is past president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.

Dr. Peragallo Montano is a graduate of the University of Chile. She holds a master’s degree in nursing from West Virginia University and a doctorate in public health from the University of Texas.

SouthardKristine Southard was appointed dean of the School of New Resources at the College of New Rochelle in New York. She has served in the role on an interim basis since last year. Earlier, she was assistant vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Southard joined the faculty at the college in 1994.

Dr. Southard is a graduate of Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, where she majored in English and political science. She holds a master’s degree in English and a Ph.D. in literature from New York University.
