In Memoriam: Alison Rickie Bernstein, 1947-2016

Alison Bernstein, who served as the director of the Institute for Women’s Leadership at Rutgers University in New Jersey, died on June 30 at her home in East Hampton, New York. She was 69 years old and suffered from endometrial cancer.
Dr. Bernstein is a native of Brooklyn, New York. She was a summa cum laude graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where she majored in history. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University. Dr. Bernstein is the author of American Indians and World War II: Toward a New Era in Indian Affairs (University of Oklahoma Press, 1991).
Dr. Bernstein worked at the Ford Foundation for more than 25 years before joining the faculty at Rutgers University in 2011. She served a brief term as an associate dean at Princeton University in the early 1990s.
