Virginia Carson to Step Down as President of South Georgia State College

Virginia Carson, who became interim president of South Georgia College in 2008 and president in 2009, announced that she will step down as president on June 30. In 2013, South Georgia College merged with Waycross College to form South Georgia State College with Dr. Carson named to lead the merged institution. Today, South Georgia State College in Douglas enrolls about 2,600 students. Women make up 65 percent of the student body.
Dr. Carson Hank Huckaby, chancellor of the University of Georgia System, stated that “President Carson has been an instrumental leader for South Georgia State College. Her steady leadership through such tremendous change has been critical to the successful consolidation and shaping of South Georgia State College.”
Dr. Carson is a graduate of the University of Georgia. She holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in mathematics education from Georgia State University in Atlanta.
