Four Women Announce They Are Stepping Down From High-Level University Posts

Anne C. Steele, the 20th president of Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio, announced that she will retire on June 30, 2016. Dr. Steele has been president of the university since 2000. Previously, she was vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Steele earned a bachelor’s degree from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. She studied at the Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, and earned both master’s and doctoral degrees from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Diana Garland, the inaugural dean of the School of Social Work at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, said that she is stepping down as dean on June 1 and will return to teaching on a full-time basis. She has been on the faculty at the university since 1997.
Dean Garland holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, all from the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
Jannah Mather, dean of the College of Social Work at the University of Utah for the past 15 years, announced that she will retire on June 1. Previously, she held faculty posts at Indiana State University, the University of Missouri, Florida State University, and Wilfred Laurier University in Canada.
Dr. Mather is a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She earned a master’s degree at the University of Michigan and a doctorate in social work at the University of Illinois.
Karen Wixson, dean of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will step down from her post on June 30. She has served as dean since 2011. Dr. Wixson will remain on the faculty at the university through the 2015-16 academic year as the William E. Moran Distinguished Professor in Reading and Literacy.
Before joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Dr. Wixson taught at the University of Michigan for more than 30 years.
