Harriett Matthews, professor of art at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, is retiring from teaching after 47 years on the faculty. When she completes a year of sabbatical leave in 2014, she will become the second longest-serving faculty member in the 200-year history of Colby College. (Professor Julian Taylor taught the classics at Colby for 63 years from 1868 to 1931.)
After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Georgia, Professor Matthews spent one year teaching at the University of Oklahoma and then joined the Colby College faculty in 1966 where she founded the sculpture program.
