In Memoriam: Maxine Garner, 1919-2013

Maxine Garner, professor emerita of religion at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, died earlier this month in Liberty, North Carolina. She was 93 years old.
Professor Garner was a native of Liberty, North Carolina, and graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in 1939. After teaching in the public schools she returned to the Woman’s College as director of religious activities.
Dr. Garner earned a master’s degree at the Union Theological Seminary in New York and a Ph.D. at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
After teaching for six years at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Garner joined the faculty at Sweet Briar College in 1957. She taught at Sweet Briar for more than a quarter century and served as the Wallace E. Rollins Professor of Religion.
