The University of Virginia recently renamed its nursing history center the Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry. It is one of only two nursing history centers in the United States and one of six worldwide. Funding for the center was provided by Eleanor Bjoring, a long-time nursing educator at the University of Texas.
The center, which was founded 20 years ago, will continue to be both a museum and archive as well as a research center. The center holds a wide array of nursing memorabilia, newspaper clippings, nursing uniforms, documents, and photographs.
All undergraduate and graduate students in nursing at the University of Virginia are required to take a course on nursing history.
